Bed Bug Control
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are a type of wingless insect found worldwide that feed on the blood of humans and other animals.
They are about ¼ inch long with oval, flattened bodies. Their color ranges from white – newly hatched – to dark brownish red. They are sometimes mistaken for ticks or cockroaches.
How do I check for bed bugs?
These tiny pests feed mostly at night and live in cracks and crevices, making identification sometimes difficult. Signs to look for include small, rust colored spots on furnishings, especially around mattress seams. These are bed bug droppings and blood spots. At first, you may notice them in mattresses. Later, as the infestation worsens, you may find bed bugs in bed frames, baseboards, door casings, wallpaper and furniture.
Do bed bugs really bite?
Bed bugs are biting insects and red, itchy welts are an indication of an infestation. Bed bugs aren’t known to transmit diseases but can cause embarrassment and discomfort. Bites occur when the pest is drawing blood and saliva injected during the bite can cause itching, swelling or infection.
How do infestations develop?
A bed bug infestation is not a reflection of poor sanitation or housekeeping. Infestations occur because bed bugs travel so easily, transported on clothes, luggage, personal items or even furniture. Bed bugs glue their eggs to surfaces and are difficult to remove, making them easy to transport from one place to another.
